This bill, known as the California Reliable and Accurate Data Infrastructure Act, aims to standardize and improve demographic data collection across California state agencies. The bill requires state agencies collecting demographic data to use at least seven minimum race and ethnicity categories: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Middle Eastern or North African, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and White. Additionally, agencies must collect and publish data on the top nine largest detailed categories within each of these minimum categories and provide write-in options for respondents to self-identify. The bill establishes a new position of Chief Statistician of California within the Demographic Research Unit to oversee and standardize demographic data collection across state agencies.
