This bill would create a new authorization for individuals pursuing architecture licensure to use the title "architect-in-training" (AIT) under specific conditions. Individuals can obtain this title after being identified as a licensure candidate and passing at least one division of the required architectural examination. The title can only be used for a maximum of four years, and users are prohibited from independently offering architectural services to the public. The California Architects Board may charge a reasonable fee to evaluate an applicant's eligibility and can disclose an individual's AIT status to the public upon request. Misuse of the title could result in administrative actions like disciplinary measures or license denial. The bill allows a person to apply for the AIT title a second time if they have passed an exam division within the previous four years. The provisions will become operative on January 1, 2027, and will remain in effect until January 1, 2036, after which the law will be repealed. Importantly, no one will be able to apply for the AIT title on or after January 1, 2032, creating a structured pathway for emerging architecture professionals to gain recognition and experience while working towards full licensure.
